چکیده

Fifth international conference on surface x-ray and neutron scattering. Abstract Grazing incidence x-ray surface scattering has been used to investigate liquid surfaces down to the molecular scale. The free surface of water is well described by the capillary wave model (< z(q)z(−q) >∝ q −2 spectrum) up to wave-vectors > 10 8 m −1. At larger wave-vectors near surface acoustic waves must be taken into account. When the interface is bounded by a surfactant monolayer, it exhibits a bending stiffness and the bending rigidity modulus can be measured. However, bending effects generally cannot be described using the Helfrich Hamiltonian and the characteristic exponent in the roughness power spectrum can be smaller than 4. Finally, upon compression, tethered monolayers formed on a subphase containing divalent ions are shown to buckle in the third dimension with a characteristic wavelength on the order of 10 8 m −1 .

The structure of real materials using x-ray and neutron scattering

Atomic and magnetic long-range order can be elucidated crystallographically from single crystals and powders. Uses of powder diffraction will be described in the next section. Short-range atomic order is obtained from diffuse scattering data from single crystals, powders, liquids and amorphous materials and developments in this area will also be described. There are many other applications whic...

Depth profiling of low energy ion implantations in Si and Ge by means of micro-focused grazing emission X-ray fluorescence and grazing incidence X-ray fluorescence

Depth-profiling measurements by means of synchrotron radiation based grazing XRF techniques, i.e., grazing emission X-ray fluorescence (GEXRF) and grazing incidence X-ray fluorescence (GIXRF), present a promising approach for the non-destructive, sub-nanometer scale precision characterization of ultra shallow ion-implantations. The nanometer resolution is of importance with respect to actual se...

Ionic depletion at the crystalline Gibbs layer of PEG-capped gold nanoparticle brushes at aqueous surfaces

In situ surface-sensitive x-ray diffraction and grazing incidence x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (GIXFS) methods are combined to determine the ionic distributions across the liquid/vapor interfaces of thiolatedpolyethylene-glycol–capped gold nanoparticle (PEG-AuNP) solutions. Induced by the addition of salts (i.e., Cs2SO4) to PEG-AuNPs solutions, two-dimensional hexagonal lattices of PEG-AuNPs...

Anomalous grazing incidence small-angle x-ray scattering studies of platinum nanoparticles formed by cluster deposition.

The size evolution of platinum nanoparticles formed on a SiO2/Si(111) substrate as a function of the level of surface coverage with deposited clusters has been investigated. The anisotropic shapes of sub-nanometer-size nanoparticles are changed to isotropic on the amorphous substrate as their sizes increased. Using anomalous grazing incidence small-angle x-ray scattering (AGISAXS), the scatteri...

The structure of the surface of pure liquids

This paper reviews the progress in the study of the structure of the surface of pure liquids made in the last 10–20 years. This area of research has benefited enormously in recent years from developments in experimental techniques (especially x-ray scattering methods based on third-generation synchrotron sources, and advanced optical techniques) and theory (particularly computer simulation and ...
